Chess Countess - Who Is Chess Countess? [EP]

Chess Countess is the alias of Auckland based singer-songwriter Tamsyn Miller. Miller announced herself as Chess Countess in 2010, competing in The University of Auckland’s Songwriter of the Year competition and reaching the final. Her stunning debut EP Who Is Chess Countess? is a roller-coaster ride, beginning with synth-driven hip-hop opener ‘Play The Game’ and finishing with orchestral-epic ‘Silent Hills’.

The EP is the culmination of her studies at The University of Auckland where she completed a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in Popular Music. The six-track set showcases Miller’s prodigious song writing talent and uninhibited blend of styles and genres. Production duties were shared three tracks apiece by Jason Hole and Andrew Brereton.

Who Is Chess Countess? is available to purchase via iTunes, amplifier.co.nz and Bandcamp.

The Psychs - Roaches [EP]

The Psychs - Roaches [EP]

The Psychs are an alternative rock band formed in 2010 in Auckland, New Zealand. The band consists of ex-Electric Confectionaires member Jaisi Sheehan (vocals, keys, guitar), Johnny Lyon (lead guitar), Simon Davenport (electric bass) and Luke Scott (drums). Songwriter Sheehan’s brand of quirky pop was an instant hit with fans and critics, with demo versions of ‘Roaches’ & ‘Gee I’ both enjoying lengthy stays at the top of Auckland student radio station 95bFM’s Top Ten charts.

The Psychs’ debut 4-track EP Roaches was released on March 9th, 2011. It includes rerecorded versions of ‘Roaches’ and ‘Gee I’ as well as ‘Wanna Do’ and ‘Blanks’. It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Andrew Brereton, who also recorded the band’s earlier demos. The band opted for a lo-fi, 60s sound, experimenting with Motown recording techniques.

Ironic Trio - In Song

Ironic Trio - In Song

Ironic Trio are a jazz trio based in Auckland, New Zealand, led by accomplished British-born pianist Mark Baynes. The trio also includes the talented Aaron Coddel playing acoustic upright bass and the legendary Jason Orme on drums. Additional guest performers include Trudy Lile on flute and vocals, Georgia Wood on vocals, Kushal Talele on tenor saxophone and Andy Smith on guitar. In Song is the second release by Ironic Trio, following the In Colour EP, released in 2009.

The album comprises an all-original set of modern compositions written by Baynes, incorporating elements of swing, funk and drum & bass. The compositions also formed a component of Baynes’ Master of Music degree from The University of Auckland. The majority of the album was recorded and edited over an intensive three-day session in September 2010 with recording engineer Andrew Brereton at The Kenneth Myers Centre. It was then mixed and mastered by Steve Garden at The Garden Shed Music Studio.

In Song is available to purchase via iTunes and amplifier.co.nz.
